Hi everyone! We are very excited about our newly formed Charity Organization. Not only do we plan to do many exciting things with funds raised, but we also want everyone to feel welcome here. If you have questions or just want a place to vent, this is the spot! Tell us your story!
My name is Cassie. My son, Josh, was diagnosed 2 years ago when he was 12. He had T1D symptoms for a while, but each one was explained by something else like growing pains. He did finally go into acute DKA and was rushed to the hospital. His first A1C was 12.1! I have been an RN for more than 20 years and would have never thought my child could be a diabetic. A few days before he went to the hospital, I noticed his increased drinking and urinating. Diabetes came to mind but no one in our family has it and I just wanted to believe that he had a "bug" of some sort. He lost 11 or 12 pounds in a matter of days and that's when I called the pediatrician. I will never forget the words, "Your son's blood sugar is over 900, get him to the hospital immediately". By the time we got on the ambulance to be transfered to Indianapolis, he was unconscious. I felt like such a failure as a mom and a nurse. We have come a VERY long way in the past 2 years. He got a pump about 15 months ago and his A1C is now 6.6!! I kept wondering why this happened to MY child. What was the reason God let this happen? I now know why. I have met a fantastic group of women who are all just as passionate about this disease as I am and with their help, I know I can make a difference for other children who are afflicted with T1D.
On behalf of T1DM, welcome to our site! Please share your thoughts. Please feel free to ask anything! There are no dumb questions. Diabetes is a complicated disease to manage. Your children are in our thoughts and prayers!!
